FUE Hair Transplant in Newcastle
FUE works by extracting individual follicular units, typically containing one to four hairs, directly from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp. Each unit is removed using a fine circular punch, leaving a small round healing point rather than the linear scar that older strip techniques leave behind.
Those extracted follicles are then placed into the recipient area, one by one, with the angle and direction of each placement matched to the natural growth pattern of the surrounding hair. The result, when done well, is a hairline or density restoration that is genuinely difficult to identify as transplanted hair.
For most patients, the punch used during FUE is between 0.75 mm and 0.8 mm. In cases involving very curly or afro-textured hair, where follicles curve beneath the skin surface, a slightly larger punch of 0.85 mm to 0.9 mm may be necessary to follow that curve safely and avoid transecting the follicle.

FUE vs DHI: Which Technique Is Right for You?
Both FUE and DHI extract follicles in the same way. The difference is in how those follicles are placed.
In standard FUE, the surgeon creates recipient sites first, then places the extracted grafts into those channels. In DHI, a Choi Implanter Pen is used to place grafts directly without prior channel creation, which can allow for slightly denser packing in some areas.
For most patients, the difference in outcome is marginal. DHI suits patients wanting maximum density in a localised area, such as a thinning crown with healthy surrounding hair, where new follicles need to be placed between existing ones without disturbing them. FUE suits a broader range of situations and is the standard for full hairline restorations.
What Recovery Looks Like After FUE
The first week after an FUE procedure is the period requiring the most care. Grafts are not yet anchored, and physical trauma or direct water pressure can dislodge them.
- Day 1 (during waking hours): Spray the recipient area with saline every 30 minutes to keep it moist
- Day 1 to 2: Remove the donor area bandage, apply antiseptic cream as directed
- Day 3: Begin washing the transplant area gently by pouring water over it, no rubbing
- Days 7 to 10: Transplanted hairs begin to shed. This is normal and expected
- Week 2: Normal shower pressure can be reintroduced
- Month 3 to 4: New hair growth begins to emerge
- Month 10 to 12: Final results visible
Sleeping at a 45-degree angle for the first seven nights using a travel pillow reduces swelling and protects the recipient area. Most patients return to desk work within three to five days.

Most FUE sessions at our Newcastle clinic take between six and nine hours, depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. Larger sessions of 3,000 grafts or more may be split across two days to maintain graft viability. Your surgeon will confirm the expected duration at your pre-procedure consultation.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You will feel the injections used to administer the anaesthetic, which can cause brief stinging, but once these take effect the extraction and implantation phases are not painful. Most patients feel some pressure but describe the experience as manageable. Post-procedure tenderness is typical for three to five days and responds well to standard over-the-counter pain relief.
Transplanted hair sheds between weeks two and four after the procedure. This is normal and does not mean the follicles are lost. New growth begins from around month three, with meaningful density appearing from month six. The full result, including final texture and density, is visible at around twelve months post-procedure.
FUE leaves multiple small round healing points across the donor area rather than a single linear scar. When the donor area is not shaved very short, these are not visible. Most patients can wear their hair at a grade 3 or above without any visible evidence of extraction. Patients who routinely wear their hair at a grade 1 or shaved may notice very fine dots, though these typically fade to near-invisible over time.
Yes. Many patients have two or more FUE sessions over time, particularly if hair loss is progressive. The feasibility of a second procedure depends on the remaining donor supply and the density already transplanted. Your surgeon will assess this during consultation and factor in expected future loss when planning the first session.
