FUE hair transplantation has become the most widely chosen approach for hair restoration in the UK. Not because it is the newest option, but because, for the vast majority of patients, it delivers the results they are actually looking for. Minimal visible scarring. A donor area that heals discreetly. Hair that grows in a way that looks like it was always there.

At Hair Transplant Newcastle, FUE procedures are performed by Dr Aziz Elgindi (GMC: 7450896) and Dr Mohammed Ditta (GMC: 7084372), both of whom have extensive experience in follicular unit extraction across a full range of hair loss patterns.

FUE Hair Transplant in Newcastle

FUE works by extracting individual follicular units, typically containing one to four hairs, directly from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp. Each unit is removed using a fine circular punch, leaving a small round healing point rather than the linear scar that older strip techniques leave behind.

Those extracted follicles are then placed into the recipient area, one by one, with the angle and direction of each placement matched to the natural growth pattern of the surrounding hair. The result, when done well, is a hairline or density restoration that is genuinely difficult to identify as transplanted hair.

For most patients, the punch used during FUE is between 0.75 mm and 0.8 mm. In cases involving very curly or afro-textured hair, where follicles curve beneath the skin surface, a slightly larger punch of 0.85 mm to 0.9 mm may be necessary to follow that curve safely and avoid transecting the follicle.

Before and After FUE Hair Transplant Results in Newcastle

A selection of results from patients treated at our Newcastle clinic. All procedures were performed by our GMC-registered surgeons.

What FUE Is Best Used For

FUE is the right choice for most patients seeking a hair transplant in Newcastle. It is particularly well suited to:

  • Receding hairlines and temple recession
  • Crown thinning, where density has reduced but some hair remains
  • Patients who want to wear short hair styles without a visible donor scar
  • Beard and eyebrow restoration, where grafts from the scalp are placed into facial areas
  • Previous FUT patients seeking additional density, where donor strip scar repair may also be addressed

FUE is not always the right answer. Patients with very limited donor supply, or those needing the maximum possible yield from a single session, may be better served by FUT, which allows the surgeon to work from an excised strip under magnification and cherry-pick the most viable follicular units. Your surgeon will advise on this during consultation.

How Many Grafts Will You Need?

Graft count is determined by the size of the area being treated and the density required to achieve a natural result. Rough ranges by hair loss pattern:

  • Hairline only (early recession): 1,200 to 1,800 grafts
  • Hairline and temples: 1,800 to 2,500 grafts
  • Crown thinning: 1,500 to 2,500 grafts
  • Combined hairline and crown: 3,000 to 4,000 grafts
  • Advanced loss (Norwood 5 to 7): 4,000 to 6,000+ grafts across multiple sessions

These figures are guides, not guarantees. A proper assessment of your donor density and recipient area is required before any number is confirmed. See our hair transplant pricing for pricing by graft count.

FUE vs DHI: Which Technique Is Right for You?

Both FUE and DHI extract follicles in the same way. The difference is in how those follicles are placed.

In standard FUE, the surgeon creates recipient sites first, then places the extracted grafts into those channels. In DHI, a Choi Implanter Pen is used to place grafts directly without prior channel creation, which can allow for slightly denser packing in some areas.

For most patients, the difference in outcome is marginal. DHI suits patients wanting maximum density in a localised area, such as a thinning crown with healthy surrounding hair, where new follicles need to be placed between existing ones without disturbing them. FUE suits a broader range of situations and is the standard for full hairline restorations.

What Recovery Looks Like After FUE

The first week after an FUE procedure is the period requiring the most care. Grafts are not yet anchored, and physical trauma or direct water pressure can dislodge them.

  • Day 1 (during waking hours): Spray the recipient area with saline every 30 minutes to keep it moist
  • Day 1 to 2: Remove the donor area bandage, apply antiseptic cream as directed
  • Day 3: Begin washing the transplant area gently by pouring water over it, no rubbing
  • Days 7 to 10: Transplanted hairs begin to shed. This is normal and expected
  • Week 2: Normal shower pressure can be reintroduced
  • Month 3 to 4: New hair growth begins to emerge
  • Month 10 to 12: Final results visible

Sleeping at a 45-degree angle for the first seven nights using a travel pillow reduces swelling and protects the recipient area. Most patients return to desk work within three to five days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most FUE sessions at our Newcastle clinic take between six and nine hours, depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. Larger sessions of 3,000 grafts or more may be split across two days to maintain graft viability. Your surgeon will confirm the expected duration at your pre-procedure consultation.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You will feel the injections used to administer the anaesthetic, which can cause brief stinging, but once these take effect the extraction and implantation phases are not painful. Most patients feel some pressure but describe the experience as manageable. Post-procedure tenderness is typical for three to five days and responds well to standard over-the-counter pain relief.

Transplanted hair sheds between weeks two and four after the procedure. This is normal and does not mean the follicles are lost. New growth begins from around month three, with meaningful density appearing from month six. The full result, including final texture and density, is visible at around twelve months post-procedure.

FUE leaves multiple small round healing points across the donor area rather than a single linear scar. When the donor area is not shaved very short, these are not visible. Most patients can wear their hair at a grade 3 or above without any visible evidence of extraction. Patients who routinely wear their hair at a grade 1 or shaved may notice very fine dots, though these typically fade to near-invisible over time.

Yes. Many patients have two or more FUE sessions over time, particularly if hair loss is progressive. The feasibility of a second procedure depends on the remaining donor supply and the density already transplanted. Your surgeon will assess this during consultation and factor in expected future loss when planning the first session.

Cost is determined by the number of grafts required, which is confirmed at consultation. As a guide, procedures in the 2,000 to 3,000 graft range typically cost between £4,000 and £7,000. Full pricing is available on our cost and pricing information. Finance options are also available through our finance options for those who prefer to spread the cost.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Would highly recommend! Everything went very smoothly, communication was excellent throughout. I travelled from Edinburgh to Manchester for the procedure and all travel and accommodation costs were covered. Dr Ditta explained everything clearly and delivered clear and detailed post-op instructions. I was delighted with the whole experience and results so far are very promising!

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

All great from start to finish. Sara with the introduction was very warm and personable, Dr. Ditta and the staff very professional and did a great job in the day of surgery, and Yannis and Stuart were great in the aftercare and checking in appointments.

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
